Supplies You'll Need
To shade, it is useful to have different values of pencils. These values can vary from (the darkest shade) 9B and (the lightest shade) 9H. You can get these pencils at any art store that has painting and drawing supplies. On the other hand, its a little harder to use just a regular pencil because the hardness of the darker shades of pencils, will make it easier to shade in really dark spots. Or if you just need to get even the lightest shade, you can use the lightest value in pencil. You could also use a tissue and smudge your shading to make your drawing more realistic.
Another vital thing to have is some great quality paper. Most printer paper will tear easier and be more flimsy. If your creating a work of art, it would be better to use a thicker paper. Most craft stores will have sketchbooks that have better paper. If you get a sketchbook, your good to go!

Awesome Techniques
There are quite a few different ways to shade.
In this example, there is hatching, cross hatching, stippling, and scribbling. These are all great ways to shade in your drawings. The way you hatch is to draw lines up and down and press down slightly more on the paper if you want a darker shade. But cross hatching is a little different. To cross hatch you have to do hatching, but its overlapping by going a different direction on the 2nd layer. In addition to those, stippling is making random dots with the same value pencil, but to lighten the shade, you lessen the amount of dots. Scribbling is pretty self-explanatory. :)

This video's intro is a little long, however it still shows a great example of when you could cross-hatch.
